The Malta Trip - 5 day itinerary

Welcome to Malta—a tiny island nation, nestled between Sicily and the North African coast, Malta is rich in history, beauty, and good vibes. Whether your looking for that romantic get-away, family friendly fun and adventures or just looking for an unforgettable European escape, this island offers it all.

Come and see what Mediterranean charm Malta can offer with this 5 day itinerary

Where to Stay

The first decision to make Valletta or Sliema? These are two great places to base yourself. Valletta is the historic capital - UNESCO world Heritage Site - charming, walkable, with every turn full of character.

Sliema, just  a short ferry trip across the harbor, has a more modern feel with it's waterfront cafes, restaurants and shopping.

Day 2:

Mdina & Rabat

Morning:

  • Head inland to the walled city of Mdina, Malta’s ancient capital,

  • Explore the cobbled streets, visit St. Paul's Cathedral, and take in views from the bastions.

Afternoon:

  • Walk to Rabat, right next door.

  • Visit St. Paul’s Catacombs or stop for a traditional Maltese platter at Crystal Palace (known for their epic pastizzi too).

Evening:

  • Head back to your base. For a chill evening, try a seaside dinner in Sliema or a casual wine bar in Valletta.

Day 4

Comino & The Blue Lagoon

Morning to Afternoon:

  • Take a boat tour or ferry to Comino Island.

  • Spend the day swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing at the Blue Lagoon—it’s famous for a reason.

  • Pack water shoes, sunscreen, and maybe a light picnic or snacks.

Evening:

  • Chill evening after all that sun. Try a sunset cocktail in St. Julian’s or go low-key with pizza and wine at Sotto Pizzeria in Valletta.

✈️ Tips for Your Malta Trip

  • Public transport is fairly reliable but get's busy—renting a car  helps for Gozo and the south.

  • Malta uses the Euro (€).

  • English is widely spoken.

  • The best time to visit is April–June or September–October (warm, but not too hot or crowded).

  • Bring swimwear, comfy shoes, and a hat—this sun doesn’t play.

Day 1

Valletta & The Three Cities

(this is based on staying in Valletta, if in Sliema the ferry runs every 30 minutes and costs 2 euros for a one way trip)

Morning:

  • Start the morning with a coffee/tea and a pastizz (flaky pastry filled with ricotta or peas), Caffe Cordina is a good place to get the day going. It's popular and for good reason

  • Head right a couple of minutes walk to reach St. John’s Co-Cathedral – it's well worth the visit and make sure you don't miss the Caravaggio painting inside.

  • A 7 minute walk will get you to Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens, where you can admire the panoramic views of the Grand Harbour.

Afternoon:

  • To start the afternoon take the ferry across to Vittoriosa (Birgu), one of the historic Three Cities.

  • From here stop in at the Malta Maritime Museum before grabbing lunch at Don Berto the italian restaurant by the marina.

  • Walk lunch off with a stroll and explore the quiet narrow streets of Birgu

Evening:

  • Take the ferry back to Valletta, there are so many great places to eat and relax - try Rubino or Legligin for something a little different.

Day 3

Gozo Day Trip

Morning:

  • Catch the ferry to Gozo (start early – ferry from Ċirkewwa).

  • Rent a car or join a tour to explore: stop by Ġgantija Temples, Victoria (Rabat), and the Citadel.

Afternoon:

  • Grab lunch at Ta’ Rikardu in Victoria or a beachside spot near Xlendi Bay.

  • Visit Dwejra Bay, once home to the Azure Window (still stunning without it!).

Evening:

  • Return to Malta via ferry.

  • Dinner near the port or back in town—Tartarun in Marsaxlokk is worth the detour if you love seafood.

Day 5:

Marsaxlokk & the South

Morning:

  • Head to Marsaxlokk, a colorful fishing village (best on Sunday for the market).

  • Walk along the waterfront and see the traditional luzzus (brightly painted fishing boats).

Afternoon:

  • Visit St. Peter’s Pool, a natural swimming spot with cliff diving opportunities.

  • Optional: swing by the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum (book tickets in advance—it sells out!).

Evening:

  • Wrap up your trip with a fancy dinner or relaxed seaside meal. If you're feeling nostalgic already, end with a walk through the lit-up streets of Valletta.
