So many of you may not have heard of Istres. Let alone be planning a trip, but being only

a 40 minute drive from Marseille it is well worth a visit, it's one of those hidden in plain sight gems!   

check the Istres website for any local festivals during you visit.Fete de l'Eau or Fete d'Istres being the main ones 


1 Day in Istres

Morning:

A local cafe

  • Start the day with a coffee and croissant or pain au chocolat, head towards Old Town and stop in at Le Petit Cafe great little cafe to begin.  

Etang de l'Olivier

  • Take a stroll around Etang de l'Olivier - Plenty of opportunities for photo's whilst walking around this scenic lake.
  • Relax and enjoy the views 
  • Take in some of the other villages on route as you loop back to Istres 

 

Midday 

Explore Old Town 

  • With it's narrow streets, quaint shops and colourful facades this is a walk that will have you stopping for photos. 
  • Follow the markers through the narrow streets as you wind your way up to Notre-Dame de Beauvoir, a historic church which sits elevated in the centre of Old Town.  

Afternoon 

Parc Dinosaur'Istres 

  • Jurassic Park in Provence - a great with 34 life-sized dinosaur models. Fun to walk around with or without the kids! A light winding walk, with some great views over the lake. 

Visit Art Centre or Local Galleries

  • Just down from the dinosaurs is an Art Zoo with animals painted in bright colours. 
  • Head to Centre d'Art Contemporain or Maison Familiale de l'Artisant to see what the latest exhibition is.

Evening 

La Romaniquette Beach 

  • Relax and unwind on the shoreline of Etang de Berre a family friendly beach . Sit and enjoy the sunset or grab a drink from the local Beach bar.

Dinner 

  • There are some good restaurants to choose from, so this will come down to personal preference. 
  • French Cusine at Le Pilon 
  • Italian at Puccini 
  • Chinese at Le Bao 
  • Seafood at Le Pointu
  • Asian at Viet-Thai
